Ammoudi beach is located in the northwestern part of the island and is the main port of Oia, at the foot of the Caldera. It is a tiny picturesque port with impressive colorful volcanic rocks shadowing the sea. It has crystal green blue waters which get deep just after a few steps. However attracts many swimmers.
This beautiful beach has nothing to do with all the other beaches of the island because it is on the cliff side of Santorini. So here, you will not find umbrellas and hundred of meters of the typical black volcanic sand. Your reward of visiting Ammoudi will be the spectacular view to Oia, Caldera and Thirasia island apart from the crystal blue waters of course.
It can be reached by the traditional way: with mules from Oia. For those who prefer hiking, they can use the 214 steep steps which they have to descend and to ascend. It is accessible also by car through the old pumice stone mines that leads down to a small parking lot. It is easy to get to from Oia, Imerovigli and Fira.
Ammoudi is one of the most charming beaches of the island, ideal for endless hours of relaxation and recreation. It has several quaint fish taverns, a mini market and cafes. Locals claims that it is the best place for fresh fish in the whole island.
Due to the proximity to Oia, Ammoudi is always gain high traffic of tourists. If you want to avoid the crowd head toward this beach in the afternoon, when everybody gather in Oia to view the golden sunset.
Here is a platform on a large rock that people can swim to and dive off.
From here you can take the boat for Thirasia or visit also by boat the church Efta Paides, which is built on a rock on the inner side of the Caldera.
